On Saturday there was a meeting between Windies selectors to pick the squad for Test Series against Indian Team which is Scheduled to start from 22nd August 2019 latter in this month. Also, this test marks the beginning of the Test Championship for Indian Cricket Team. Windies selectors picked Rakheem Cornwall and Shamarh Brooks for the two-match test series against India in 13 man squad which Windies selector picked on Saturday.
Rakheem Cornwall had a terrific season for his state team Leeward Islands Hurricanes in West Indies Test Championship and West Indies ‘A’. On the back of stellar performances, he has been presented with an opportunity to play for his International side and contribute with his performance. He is a right-arm off-spinner with some batting capabilities, in short, he is a spinning all-rounder. In just 55 First-class matches he has 260 wickets to his name and in the batting department, he is just averaging above 24 in which he has smashed 13 fifties and 1 hundred. So, his stats suggest that he could be a useful player for West Indies lower down the order with the bat.
If we look at the squad announced by the West Indies Cricket Board Selectors, there is no proper spinner in the squad and it looks likely in the first Test match against India Rakheem Cornwall is set to make debut for his international team after a long wait. And the new recruit in the West Indies team is Shamarh Brooks who had a decent outing during the Test matches against India ‘A’ Test Team where he scored two fifties and also he has an experience of 73 first-class matches.
Rakheem Cornwall: An attacking bowling option
Selectors believe that Rakheem Cornwall can give the West Indian team an attacking bowling option with his sharp turn and bounce which he gets due to his height and can be a useful cricketer coming down the lower order and providing some useful runs in the bottom half of the team. He could prove to be a match-winner for the West Indies team in the long term, this is what selectors feel at the moment from his performances.
Only two players who are unfortunate to not get selected in the Test squad from the last series which they won against England earlier in this year are Alzarri Joseph and Jomel Warrican. Latter is nursing his injury which he sustained during England series while Warrican has been dropped from the squad after poor performances. Keemo Paul earns a place in the Test squad for the series against India which starts from 22nd August.
